DESIGNING A PICTURE-PERFECT LANDSCAPE: THE NEW EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY OF ART + DESIGN CONNECTS TO THE COMMUNITY

The greatest thing since sliced bread. Orange is the new black. Things have a way of being replaced over time, but this isn’t the case for The Exchange, which is being developed by SwissReal Group Canada at the corner of Howe and West Pender Streets in the heart of downtown Vancouver, British Columbia.

ALBERTA

New Central Library on Track to Impress

When plans and construction came together for Calgary, Alberta’s 240,000 square-foot new central library (NCL), the architects and design teams were faced with challenges that forced them to pool their collective know-how to create a one-of-a-kind opportunity. Chief among those challenges was ensuring the structure had a stunning envelope while building a tunnel around 150 metres of the city’s active, underground light rail transit (LRT) track.

SASKATCHEWAN

Urban Living, to the Extreme

In the heart of downtown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, an urban development has taken shape, contributing to the pulse of the city and the creative feel and youthful energy of the neighbourhood. Historic Riversdale, one of Saskatoon’s oldest and most diverse neighbourhoods, is now home to The Banks in Riversdale, which was completed in May 2016 and has over 60 per cent occupancy already.

MANITOBA

Reinventing the Downtown

In February 2016, rumours were put to rest when a $400-million project called True North Square was announced for downtown Winnipeg. The ambitious mixed-use project aims to redefine the heart of the city with the biggest private sector commercial project in the city’s downtown history. Winnipeg’s own James Richardson & Sons, Ltd. is a 50 per cent equity partner in the project.

INNOVATION

ICOR™ – A NOVEL WIRELESS CORROSION RATE MEASUREMENT DEVICE

The iCOR™ device, invented by the Giatec Scientific Inc., is a novel compact and comprehensive NDT tool (or non-destructive testing) for detailed corrosion evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. iCOR™ is unique in its ability to perform a three in one measurement. It is capable of measuring the corrosion rate of the rebar, half-cell corrosion potential, and in-situ electrical resistivity of concrete without the need to drill a hole to connect to the rebar directly.

RESEARCH

THE WIND BENEATH MY PHOTOVOLTAIC ROOFTOP ASSEMBLIES

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has been studying new ways to utilize what has often been a much forgotten piece of structural real-estate. Yet, the roofs of our homes play a major role in controlling temperature and rainfall, and even the generation of power.

EYE ON ARCHITECTURE

OPTIMIZE WITH COMPUTATION

The need for certainty in design is increasing in demand in the building industry. The ability to clearly see and understand all factors that influence a potential building is proving to be essential in efficiently creating high performance buildings, particularly with unique forms. Computational design, a hybrid of computer programming and design, meets this need as a tool that can be used to accelerate the design process and optimize building performance and construction, all in a cost-effective way.

ON THE SAFE SIDE

Managing Liability Risks for Corporate Directors and Officers

As Canadian competitiveness evolves, construction companies must innovate to remain relevant. It is known, however, that with trial comes error. Particularly today, when Canadians have become more indebted than ever before, and when certain commodities are trading at historical lows, the scope and scale of a construction project can change in an instant, and the directors and officers of these companies must be prepared to make the most difficult of management decisions.
